enough already, we heard you the first 20 times dude

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last three months, which in Austin might be a real possibility, except instead of a rock its a mountain of cocaine, Sparks, and American Apparel clothing, then you probably already know that tonight is a really big night for our little Learning Secrets.

Tonight we celebrate our 5 year anniversary!

We wanted to do something special this time around to say thank you to everybody who has shown Learning Secrets so much support over the years, and to hopefully win over a few new fans as well. So, we teamed up with Toyota to make sure we could try to keep this as free as possible.

What's the "this" I am refering about DJ sets by Andy Butler from Hercules and Love Affair and Pat Mahoney from LCD Soundsystem!!

Prototype Vintage is decking the place out something special, and Annie Ray is going to make you look pretty and take over your social networking site. You'll also be able to pick up a hot of the presses LS t-shirt FOR FREE, thanks to the good people from Toyota Antics.

The RSVP list is nutso full, so you're going to want to get there as early as possible to make a night of it. Jeramy and I will be on warm up duty.

and, as a special treat heres a new demo from my Secret Lips project. I'll probably be dropping this tonight. Hope you enjoy.

like robotripping at the paradise garage

Even though our hugely massive, and totally badical 5 yr anniversary is still a few days away, and you're probably just now recovering from the party with Juan Maclean and Liv from Still Going, we're gonna keep the body slams coming, and start hyping you on our special guests for February's party with the ever exquisite RUNAWAY!!

We honestly couldn't be more excited to be finally getting these two guys down here. The two handsome gentlemen that make up Runaway, Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral, are intimidation inspiring and eye-popping DJs and producers in their own right, but together the two have constructed a powerhouse whose productions on Wurst Edits, Rekids, and DFA make your insides feel as if they'll ooze out of your underroos and all over the dance floor.

The amazing drugged out, faggy funk, disco thump, of their house anthems is THE Runaway sound. Made for packed, dark dance floors, and for sexually ambiguous boys and girls dosed out on X. Tracks like their massive "Brooklyn Club Jam" or "Ain't Afraid to Beg," demand that you slut yourself up if you plan on approaching the floor when the duo is behind the decks. This shit is serious, and it has mad flavor, and impeccable taste. Its that new new, next next shit. Forget fuzzed out basslines, saw synths, and generic agro club beats, that shit is for beginners and poseurs. Now this shit right here, this shit right here is house music--the real deal!

So save the date, Saturday February 28th. Cover will be around $3 probably unless we can make it free. We'll see you all this Saturday though for our 5 YR anniversary at Beauty Bar with DJ sets from Andy Butler ( Hercules & Love Affair) and Pat Mahoney ( LCD Soundsystem / Special Disco Versions). Come early, its sold out!!!!

Runaway has a new mix of looped out house jams that you need to pick up...get ready Austin, Learning Secrets in February just may change your life!...if our anniversary party doesnt!

setting sail on a sea of 2000 women

From Rolling Stone bass player to writing one of my favorite jams;Bill Wyman, making me smile when things are a bit too Sunday, even for a Sunday. A fun little fact, in 1989 Mr. Wyman married his then 18 year old girlfriend, whom he had been dating since she was 13 years old. Wyman was born in 1936. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

EP local release show tonight @ Mohawk 1/24/09

The first time I saw Ume play was at the Whisky Bar, back in 2006 or 2007 when they were the showcased band at a Learning Secrets night. They blew me out of the water, and they continue to do so with each time I see them live. Its rare that a band is able to juggle aggresion and angst with, and I'm going to be extremely frank here, total sex appeal. Its also rare that a three piece rock band is able to sound so huge live, Jawbreaker did it well, and at the end of the day, after all the tired comparisons about Ume's sound are made, the one that I think warrants any merit is the comparison to Jawbreaker. However, there is more to Ume, and their sound, than what lies on the surface.

We're super stoked to be working with Ume on their new EP Sunshower, the local release show of which is tonight at Mohawk. The EP is full of some the strongest songs we've heard in a while, and again to be totally honest, its one of a handful of records as of late that is re-sparking my faith in guitar driven bands again ( A quick digression : I hate saying "rock," or "indie rock," because 1) lets be honest, when you hear a band being described as a "rock" band its kind of a turn off a wee bit, and 2) what the hell is an "indie rock" band anymore anyways? Vampire Weekend? or is it your little brothers band practicing in your mom and dads garage?).

I'll quit the rambling, and you get your posse together to come down to the Mohawk a little later tonight. We'll see each other, share a beer, and then allow ourselves to be totally floored by the talent that is Ume.

Click to listen, Download to enjoy, & as always, supprt the artist by actually buying their record.

a do juan juan juan - a do juan juan

Way back in September we brought in Juan Maclean to play live at the Mohawk. It was an intimate monday evening, and those that were there caught a glimpse of something truly special.
Tonight, Juan's back for a third time (round one was with Tim Sweeney back in 2007 @ Whisky Bar) and this time he's bringing friends. Liv, 1/2 of the spaced out Still Going, also on DFA ,will be sharing the decks with Juan and myself tonight.
This one is sure to sell out, so i would advise RSVPING, though I'm not sure if RSVPING secures you a spot. Regardless, come jack with us.

Lets get one thing clear right now, Saturday January 31st is going to be the best night you've had so far this year. I think that if you've had your ears cleaned out lately, or been to some totally bitching house parties, where Young Austin kids are picking fights with Old Austin kids ( I'm looking at you New Years Eve ) over the cranks on their super masculine fixies ( last years new low rider bike ), then I'm sure you've heard about our 5 Year Anniversary Party. Wait, I'm sorry, I mean, our MASSIVE 5 Year Anniversary Party!

In the event that you havent heard, or dont care to listen to gossip, then here is a quick bullet point of what I am talking about.

  • Super Special Guest DJ SETS by Andy Butler from Hercules & Love Affair and Pat Mahoney from LCD Soundsystem / Special Disco Version
  • YEAH BRO ITS FREE!!!!!! Cause we love you so much, and as a way to say thanks for your support over the last 5 years!!!
  • TO GET IN FREE YOU NEED TO RSVP HERE: When? Right Damn Now Fool.
  • If you dont rsvp you'll be dropping a measly $3 at the door. ( $3 for this line up... INSANITY )
  • Prototype Vintage, our favorite store in Austin, will be decking out the Beauty Bar for the night
  • Annie Ray will taking you photo
  • We're thinking of having a costume contest...come dressed up as your favorite Greek God and get a free Beer, I'll let you know about that one.
  • WE WANT TO SEND A HUGE HUGE THANK YOU TO ELI AND THE WHOLE ANTICS AND TOYOTA CREW FOR MAKING THIS NIGHT POSSIBLE!!! They'll be on hand with a T-shirt screen printing booth, a Toyota Matrix loaded up with Rockband, and lord knows what other stuff to keep you busy when you're not Jacking and Vogueing on the floor.
That's all for now...more to come, stay tuned, though I'll be posting a DJ mix by Mr. Butler sometime later next week.
